Background of the Study
Bilingual cognitive control refers to the ability to manage and switch between two or more languages while suppressing interference. Nigerian indigenous language speakers, who often engage with multiple languages in daily life, provide a unique context for studying cognitive control mechanisms. Research indicates that bilingual individuals may exhibit enhanced cognitive control due to the constant management of competing linguistic systems (Umeh, 2023). This study evaluates bilingual cognitive control among Nigerian indigenous language speakers by examining performance on tasks that measure inhibition, task-switching, and working memory. Neuroimaging techniques, such as fMRI and ERP, are used to identify the neural substrates associated with cognitive control in bilingual contexts. The research investigates whether the cognitive benefits observed in bilinguals extend to speakers of indigenous languages, considering factors such as language proficiency, frequency of language use, and sociolinguistic context (Eze, 2024; Nwachukwu, 2025). Understanding these mechanisms may lead to improved educational practices and cognitive training programs that leverage bilingualism as a means of enhancing overall cognitive performance.
Statement of the Problem
Although bilingual cognitive control has been studied extensively in global languages, there is limited research on this phenomenon among Nigerian indigenous language speakers. Many existing studies focus on bilingual populations using dominant global languages, leaving a gap in understanding how indigenous language speakers manage cognitive control. This gap hinders the development of interventions that could harness bilingual advantages for cognitive enhancement in these communities. The lack of context-specific data limits our knowledge of how sociocultural factors influence cognitive control mechanisms in indigenous language settings (Umeh, 2023; Nwachukwu, 2025).
Objectives of the Study:
1. To assess cognitive control abilities in bilingual Nigerian indigenous language speakers.
2. To identify neural correlates associated with bilingual cognitive control.
3. To propose interventions to enhance cognitive control through bilingual practices.
Research Questions:
1. How effective is cognitive control among Nigerian indigenous language speakers?
2. What neural mechanisms underlie bilingual cognitive control in this population?
3. How can bilingual cognitive control be enhanced through targeted interventions?
Significance of the Study :
This study is significant as it evaluates bilingual cognitive control in Nigerian indigenous language speakers, providing insights into the neural and cognitive benefits of bilingualism in culturally diverse contexts. The findings will inform educational and cognitive training programs that leverage bilingual advantages to improve overall cognitive performance (Umeh, 2023; Eze, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to evaluating bilingual cognitive control in Nigerian indigenous language speakers using neuroimaging and behavioral assessments, without extending to monolingual or non-indigenous language speakers.
